Dear USTA Officials,

As some of you who have already attended officials training classes may know, effective January 1, 2014, the 3 steps outlined below must be fulfilled to be eligible to serve as a USTA Certified  Official, USTA Player Development Event Coach, SmashZone Volunteer, Massage Therapist, Athletic Trainer, or USTA Youth Tennis Workshop Coach (“Applicants”). In an effort to protect all competitors, this procedure is now mandatory in most sports for all officials and for all of those who assist the athletes in competition.

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Many USTA Officials have asked if it would be acceptable to take the condensed version of the training which originally only applied to Junior Team Tennis volunteers.  We listened to your concerns and after discussions with the Safe Play initiative staff  at the USTA, it was determined that those who completed the condensed training would have those results count.  Going forward any official needing to take the training this year will have the option to take either the condensed training session or the full training session.  Click here to access that training module if you have not yet completed it.  Finally, remember that most districts and sections review work records for certification starting October 15 so it is strongly recommended that you make sure your records are up to date in the Nucula system prior to your USTA Section or District imposed deadline.

Thanks,

USTA Officiating Team

Hello Officials,

We received a lot of feedback and questions about the email that was sent on Wednesday regarding the Safe Play and Background Check requirements for 2015.  We would like to clear up some of the confusion using the questions you sent us:

Why is it that when I tried to apply for a background check, it says I already have one pending/completed?

Officials can only apply for a background check for 2015 certification AFTER OCTOBER 1st.  If you attempt to apply prior to October 1st, the system will prevent you from submitting the request if you have a cleared screening already on file.

I submitted to a background check earlier in the year, do I need to submit one again?

Yes, ALL OFFICIALS seeking 2015 re-certification need to submit a new background check after October 1st, regardless to when they last submitted to the screening.

Why am I being required to submit again if I already have one on file from this year?

The reason for requiring all officials to resubmit is in an effort to keep ALL officials on the same 2 year renewal cycle.

Do I need to complete the USOC Training Module if I already completed it?

No, you WILL NOT be required to complete the module again.  You will be asked when submitting for the background check (After October 1st) whether or not you have completed this training.  If you have completed the training you should respond “Yes”.

Do I send a copy of my USOC Training Module Certification to the USTA Officiating Department?

No, you do not need to submit your current certification to us.  We recommend that you keep it for your own records as a confirmation of completion.

We thank you for your feedback and hope this FAQ answers your questions. Please email officiating@usta.com if you have any further questions.

Thanks,

USTA Officiating Team
