Dear USTA Official,

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are looking forward to a great new year of tennis officiating.  2016 is going to be a big year for USTA Officiating. We have lots of positive changes happening, including new uniforms, a revamped Friend at Court, and new on-line education platform. Below are a few updates to help you get the year started right:

Education and Tests

One of our main charges was to improve the Education Component of the USTA Officiating Program to make it easily accessible, more comprehensive, and consistent across the country.  Over the next two years, we will replace the traditional USTA in-person certification schools with on-line education modules.  The on-line tests will no longer be 75-100 questions posted at the beginning of the year, but concise 20-30 questions to be done after each module.

At the end of the month, we will launch the first four modules of the planned 14 on-line-modules:

  • Introduction to Officiating
  • Rules and Regulations 1
  • Rules and Regulations 2
  • Rules and Regulations 3

Two additional modules for Rover and Referee will be available in the Spring. More information will be forthcoming with the official unveiling of the program.

Friend at Court

When you receive your Friend at Court, you will notice that there have been some changes.  The USTA has transferred many USTA Comments from the ITF Rules of Tennis and USTA Regulations to an on-line document called USTA Officiating: Scenarios and Interpretations.  The majority of Regulation VII has been removed and will be available on-line as documents entitled USTA Officiating: Techniques and Procedures and USTA Officiating: Certifications.  In addition, the ITA Regulations have been moved to an on-line document that will be updated when changes occur.  All these documents and more can be accessed via the USTA Officiating page or USTA Resources page.

The Friend at Court was sent to the printer mid-December, however, there was a delay at the printer that prevented them going to print. As a result, they anticipate the Friend at Courts to be mailed the week of the 25th. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you don’t receive your copy by the 2nd week in February, please email officiating@usta.com with your name and address.

As we mentioned before, tests will now be incorporated within the on-line modules. The 2016 Friend at Court is now available on the Rules page of the USTA Officiating Website. To view the 2016 updates, click here and scroll to page 13.

New Uniform Program

We ending 2015 by rolling out the new USTA Officiating Uniform Program. Pro Circuit Officials are already wearing the new uniform and the Officials at Community Events will complete the transition by March 1, 2016

The new red hat option will be available to order for $17.50 next week.  If you already placed your order without the hat, please look for a separate communication regarding how to get your hat without paying for shipping again.

If you haven’t ordered your new uniform, please be proactive and place your order to ensure you are prepared for the March 1st deadline. For more information about the Uniform Program: Click here.

Thank you for your continued hard work and dedication to USTA Tennis Officiating.   You are an integral part of growing the game of tennis.  If you have any questions, please email us at officiating@usta.com

Happy New Year!

The USTA Officiating Team
